Pjila’si (p-chi-laa-si), welcome!
Walking in the Footsteps is proud to introduce our newest project: “Kluskap and the Mi’kmaq Trail Systems.”
Across Mi’kma’ki (meeg-gm-aa-gi), the land holds stories. They are sacred, powerful, and deeply rooted in language and nature. We’re honoured to be sharing traditional stories from Mi’kmaw communities across Nova Scotia, all tied to hiking trails you can explore today!
Many of these stories are centered around Kluskap (pronounced Gloos-cap in English), a Mi’kmaq hero. The trails featured in this project are culturally significant and closely tied to Kluskap’s journey through the province. When walking these trails, it is customary to leave a gift in his honour. It could be a song or prayer, or be as simple as caring for the land by picking up litter, walking with respect, and showing gratitude.
Kluskap is a highly respected figure in Mi’kmaw culture. His presence continues to guide Mi’kmaw language, spirituality, and daily life across communities today. One of Nova Scotia’s Mi’kmaw communities is even named in his honour! They are called Glooscap First Nation.
These stories follow part of Kluskap’s journey, including his interactions with the beaver, or Kopit (Pronounced Gobit in English). From Kluskap’s Cave to Cape Split, you’ll travel across the province, learning not only about beautiful trails you can hike on your own time, but also about the cultural significance of these places and the communities they are part of.
We encourage you to explore the trails we will be sharing. Please keep in mind that some are more challenging than others, and not all are equally developed or accessible. Always respect private property, and above all, take care of the land you walk on.
Thank you so much to Wasuek Googoo and Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq for gathering and sharing this information. It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to learn these stories, and we are so excited to share them with you!
Wela'lin (Well-ah-lin), thank you.
