Walkable Communities
It is a lot easier to enourage walking when a community is walkable and accessible. NS walks aims to contribute to walkable communities in our province.
Walking Audit Toolkit
In partnership with our friends at the Ecoloy Action Centre, we have developed a walking audit toolkit which helps communities plan and implement a walking audit in their community. The audit helps us understand the pedestrian experience and can measure the walkability of a community. During a walk audit, participants use the walking audit tool to walk a chosen route and observe things like sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, speed limits and overall safety. It helps identify areas that need improvement for pedestrians. The goal is to make communities more walkable, safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Doing a walk audit is a great way for community members to engage with municipal staff and elected officials to discuss what is great about a particular walking route and what needs improvement.
The walking audit toolkit is now available

Communities of Practice
We are currently developing a "community of practice" for any community or municipality in Nova Scotia who wishes to learn from each other with regards to improving walkabilty. We will have opportunities for sharing and professional development throughout the year. As well, you will be able to connect with other communites who are working to improve walkabilty. If you wish to join the community, you can email walk@hikenovascotia.ca
